Science In Focus: Force and Motion  "The Lure of Magnetism"  What is the difference between a permanent magnet and an electromagnet? In this workshop, fourth-grade students build an electromagnet by winding a wire around a rivet and attaching the ends to battery terminals. The students first predict how many washers they can pick up with the help of their electromagnet and then perform the experiment to test their predictions. After the number of washers is recorded and the results are discussed, the students engage in a group discussion about practical uses for electromagnets. [G]

One Stroke Painting with Donna Dewberry  "Pop Art"  Donna shows how to paint dragonflies, hydrangeas and other flowers and how to make the paintings pop out by using dark backgrounds. [G]

Simply Ming  "Kung Pao Sauce"  In Chinese cuisine, Kung Pao Sauce is a classic way to dress up vegetables, beef, chicken, and fish. Joined by two very special guests, Iris and Stephen Tsai (better known as "Mom & Pops"), Ming creates Kung Pao Chicken and Kung Pao Clams and Pork using his master recipe. [P]

Lidia's Italy  "Sweet and Spicy Calabria"  What unique and favorite regional product of Calabria did the Queen of England have delivered regularly to the castle's kitchen? That would be the Tropea onion, a purple torpedo-looking sweet onion that is used to enhance the flavor in much of Calabrian cuisine, and whose healing properties have been promoted since Roman times. When not the Tropea onions, you can surely find the heat from all the peperoncino that is used to add spice to the cuisine, and is found in every household. [P]
