Idaho High School Seniors Preserve War Memories, Earn Scholarship Money with Senior Thesis Project

Three Idaho students are leaving high school with scholarships for any Idaho college or university, awarded for senior thesis projects that help preserve stories and memories of Idaho citizens affected by war.

Neil Parkinson of Arco, first-place winner, earned a $300 scholarship; Valerie Pantone of Shoshone took second place for a $200 scholarship and Travis Sherman of Midvale is the third-place winner with a $100 scholarship.

The 2008 Idaho Homefront Senior Thesis Project was conducted by Idaho Public Television in conjunction with the IdahoPTV production IDAHO HOMEFRONT: OF CAMPS AND COMBAT and the national PBS production THE WAR.

The students incorporated oral histories into their thesis projects. The projects included logs of interviews, transcripts of interviews, a comprehensive paper that explores the time period or events mentioned in the oral history; a digital slide presentation, Web site or other presentation form; and a self-evaluation.

“Entries were judged on planning, technical quality, creativity and overall presentation,” says Kris Freeland, KUID station manager in Moscow. “Congratulations to our winners and everyone who entered.”

More information about the project is posted online at: idahoptv.org/productions/specials/homefront/thesis.

The educational outreach was made possible by support from corporate sponsors Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club.

Photos of the student winners are available at idahoptv.org/presskit/ on the Idaho Public Television Web site.
