— Students From Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Moscow, Lewiston, Orofino and Cottonwood Are North Idaho Winners

Four North Idaho students are first place winners in the Idaho Public Television/KUID regional READING RAINBOW Young Writers and Illustrators Awards contest.

Kameron Vordahl of Post Falls is the first place winner in the kindergarten category with a story called “The Adventure of Me and My Brother.” Calli Perrin of Cottonwood topped the first-grade category with “Sarah and the Rat’s Nest.” Sean Schumacher of Lewiston won the second-grade category with a story titled “I Wish I Were a Snake” and Clayton Hatfield of Lewiston took third grade honors with “Let the Games Begin!” All four winners qualified for the national contest by placing first in their grade level among competitors in the Idaho Public Television/KUID viewing area. The national contest culminates during June with the announcement of the winners. National competitors are vying for electronic prizes, such as computers, televisions and DVD recorders, and MP3 players, READING RAINBOW DVDs and related books for home, school and library.

All state contestants wrote stories illustrated with at least five pictures and submitted the entries to the IdahoPTV station in their region.

Placing second and third among their grade levels in the North Idaho region are:

Two ceremonies will honor all the North Idaho winners — first through third place in each grade. The events are scheduled at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, May 10 (Saturday) at 4:00 p.m. and at the Hastings Book, Music and Video in Lewiston, May 17 (Saturday) at 2:00 p.m. Students will read their stories aloud, receive certificates signed by LeVar Burton, host of the READING RAINBOW series; and receive donated prizes.

Statewide, 887 students submitted entries from 87 Idaho communities to IdahoPTV regional stations — KUID/Moscow, KISU/Pocatello and KAID/Boise — for the 14th Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators contest. In North Idaho, 345 students submitted stories and illustrations for judging.

First-place stories from each region of Idaho will be available by the end of May for viewing on the IdahoPTV Web site (idahoptv.org).

The annual competition is for students in kindergarten through third grade. Entries are judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of text and pictures.

READING RAINBOW, a television series that encourages children to read on their own, airs weekdays on IdahoPTV at 2:30/1:30 p.m. MT/PT. Idaho Public Television airs 11 hours of children’s programming each weekday and five and a half hours each Sunday morning — more than 60 hours each week.
